Self-sensing asphalt composite with carbon microfibers for smart weigh-in-motion

Abstract The need for ageing infrastructure monitoring has recently emerged as an urgent priority in many countries. Smart road is a technology that could be used to address this issue by enabling on-time decisions such condition-based maintenance. For example, automatic traffic beneficial improving fatigue analysis, and maintenance planning management of overloaded vehicles. This can done through image-based monitoring, weight measurements static scales, weigh-in-motion (WIM) stations. WIM identify classify the type, number, vehicles passing over given segment without interrupting flow. general drawbacks existing technologies are their high costs, low durability, complex deployment. paper proposes new asphalt-like composite self-sensing pavements serve low-cost durable sensor. proposed novel material consists commercial binder called EVIzero, doped with natural aggregates carbon microfibers. These microfibers provide electrical conductivity piezoresistive properties percolation. Here, both preparation applications its electromechanical characterization examined. Various cylindrical samples fabricated using different percentages were produced investigated order evaluate signal quality strain sensing capabilities. It found mix 1% respect best performance due A mid-size slab sample optimal achieve preliminary demonstration material’s feasibility sensing. results show linear relationship between response induced established $$R^2$$ R 2 93%.
